BASIX CERTIFICATE
Paving the Way for Sustainable Living in NSW
WHAT IS A BASIX CERTIFICATE?
BASIX (Building Sustainability Index) is a NSW Government initiative to encourage sustainable residential development and is in effect part of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.

BASIX has been established to meet targets of up to 40% reductions in water consumption as well as greenhouse gas reductions by up to 25%.

UNDERSTANDING THE BASIX ASSESSMENT
BASIX is a calculation of key information about the development to determine whether the project meets the NSW governments targets for energy and water consumption and takes into consideration the following:
LOCATION OF BUILDING
BUILDING FOOTPRINT
CONSTRUCTION TYPE OF BUILDING
WINDOW SIZE AND TYPE
LANDSCAPE AREAS
INDIGENOUS PLANTING AREAS
APPLIANCES USED IN THE BUILDING
WATER CONSUMPTION
WATER HARVESTING
SOLAR SYSTEMS

WHEN WOULD I REQUIRE A BASIX CERTIFICATE?
Every new residential dwelling and alterations/add ons project built in NSW of $50,000 or more require a BASIX certificate. Residential dwellings include:
SINGLE DWELLINGS
TOWNHOUSES
DUAL-OCCUPANCY DWELLINGS
VILLAS
BOARDING HOUSES
APARTMENTS
SWIMMING POOLS & OUTDOOR SPA WITH WATER CAPACITY GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 40 000 LITRES OR 40 KILOLITRES
